Hey,

I'm about to study computer science at uni wien under the erasmus scheme. Hope, you can help me with the following:

1) What is the cost of the Internet access. Which ISP do you recommend? (I'm going to live in the 11 bezirk)

2) Are there any cs courses taught in English? (due to http://online.univie.ac.at/vlvz?lang=en&extended=Y there are not, but who knows...:])

3) Could you describe shortly how does course passing look? Apart exams, how many middle-tests do you have? Is it possible to pass them all with poor German skills? (imagine yourself not knowing only little German ;])

4) Which courses do you recommend - are easy to pass? (I need 24 ECTS)

ps. You can answer in German, I've wrote in English because it would be hard-readable for you, if I used my German skills ;P

Thank you, in advance, for all answers
Best regards,
Michael

1) What is the cost of the Internet access. Which ISP do you recommend? (I'm going to live in the 11 bezirk)

There are special offers for students, however, I don't know where the ones for univie.ac.at are listed.

2) Are there any cs courses taught in English? (due to http://online.univie.ac.at/vlvz?lang=en&extended=Y there are not, but who knows...:])I'd recommend talking to the professor(s) and asking them if they could recommend some material in English. Or maybe they'll change the language of the lectures when requested.

3) Could you describe shortly how does course passing look? Apart exams, how many middle-tests do you have? Is it possible to pass them all with poor German skills? (imagine yourself not knowing only little German ;])The course structure depends on the type of the course.

Courses marked VO only have a final exam, which determines the final grade.
Courses marked UE and PS usually comprise of theory exercises, presentations, practical exercises and/or tests. Normally, the exact structure is presented in the first lecture.
Courses marked SE usually require you to read literature, give a talk and hand in a paper.

Language: For some lectures, the exam is provided in English and German and you can choose one (e.g. in the Medical Propaedeutics course). I'd recommend talking to the professors. If the exam is oral, ask them if they could give the questions in English and accept answers in English. If the exam is written, ask if you could get an English question sheet, allowed to answer in English or take an (English) oral exam instead. And if all this fails, I'd recommend that you learn the most important words and phrases by heart and hope for the best. (However, professors are normally very cooperative when it comes to such requests.)

4) Which courses do you recommend - are easy to pass? (I need 24 ECTS)Well, it depends on what "Ausprägungsfach" (elective) you've chosen and what prerequisites you have, so it is hard to give general recommendations.

1) What is the cost of the Internet access. Which ISP do you recommend? (I'm going to live in the 11 bezirk)www.chello.at (http://www.chello.at), www.inode.at (http://www.inode.at) www.sil.at (http://www.sil.at) - they all have special conditions for students.

2) Are there any cs courses taught in English? (due to http://online.univie.ac.at/vlvz?lang=en&extended=Y there are not, but who knows...:])Very little. Can't remember any at the moment. But course materials are in English often.

3) Could you describe shortly how does course passing look? Apart exams, how many middle-tests do you have? Is it possible to pass them all with poor German skills? (imagine yourself not knowing only little German ;])Depends. You have to check the website for every course you're interested in.

4) Which courses do you recommend - are easy to pass? (I need 24 ECTS)What are you interested in? 3d graphics? Software Engineering? Kernel hacking? Embedded Systems?

ps. You can answer in German, I've wrote in English because it would be hard-readable for you, if I used my German skills ;PDamn. Read that too late. So this will be hard-readable for you. :D

Thank you very much indeed, you are so helpful and gave my the impression I can pass an exam taught in German :]

I'm doing Bachelor degree and due to obligatory courses at my mother-university I have to take more or less the following:

- Algorithmen und Datenstrukturen PI.ADS.AD.VO, UE
- Datenbanksystem PI.INT.IT.VO, PR
- Internettechnologien PI.INT.IT.VO, PR
- Netzwerktechnologie für Multimedia Anwendungen
- something connected with Computer Graphic

And here comes some questions:

1) What PR stands for? Is it Project?

2) What does it mean "PI.ADS.AD"?

3) Is it possible to pass only VO (4 ECTS) without UE or PR (2 ECTS)

4) Where can I find details (a conspectus) about particular course? I cannot find any link from Vorlesungsverzeichnis ( http://online.univie.ac.at/vlvz?kapitel=503&semester=S2007&lang=en )

5) Are there any 3d graphic courses available?

6) Could you describe shortly what are condition to pass the above courses? How many mid-terms, projects to do, projects are for invidual or in pairs, do I get points during group meetings, maybe you know where can I find exams and middle-term test from last semesters courses

7) Are there any computer science courses taught totally in english? (if so please try to remember the names:])

Kind regards,
mp

1) What PR stands for? Is it Project?

Yes.

2) What does it mean "PI.ADS.AD"?This is the name of the module: "Informationstechnologie, Algorithmen und Datenstrukturen" (Information Technology, Algorithms and Data Structures).

3) Is it possible to pass only VO (4 ECTS) without UE or PR (2 ECTS) I wouldn't recommend it, but it is possible.

4) Where can I find details (a conspectus) about particular course? I cannot find any link from Vorlesungsverzeichnis ( http://online.univie.ac.at/vlvz?kapitel=503&semester=S2007&lang=en )If there is no link, more information was provided in the first lecture. Contact the professor or fellow students.

5) Are there any 3d graphic courses available?I think there are only some available at Vienna University of Technology:
http://tuwis.tuwien.ac.at/zope/_ZopeId/88234846A2zWdLp.asw/tpp/lv/search/processSearche?srchVal=computer+graphics&aktion=Search

6) Could you describe shortly what are condition to pass the above courses? How many mid-terms, projects to do, projects are for invidual or in pairs, do I get points during group meetings, maybe you know where can I find exams and middle-term test from last semesters coursesI only know about the Algorithms and Data Structures UE course: for this course, you have to present and implement an algorithm in groups. I'd recommend asking a group if you can join (as the groups were already formed in March). For the VO, there is just a final exam.

Old exams may be found here: http://mtb-projekt.at.tf , however, only look for files marked "HU" or "univie", as other files are old exams and the like from Vienna University of Technology.

7) Are there any computer science courses taught totally in english? (if so please try to remember the names:])Vienna University of Technology:
http://tuwis.tuwien.ac.at/lecture/184237/2006W (http://tuwis.tuwien.ac.at/lva/184237/2006W) (The lecture was last semester, but you can take exams this semester; you have to study a book (Tanenbaum: Distributed Systems); and the exam questions are in German, but you can answer in either English or German.)
or search for more here: http://tuwis.tuwien.ac.at/zope/_ZopeId/37209330A2zWevNR6Yg/tpp/lv/lv/search/indexe_html
(tick the box "lectured in English")

7) Are there any computer science courses taught totally in english? (if so please try to remember the names:])The courses I have attended/I'm currently attending in English language are
Complexity Theory (http://tuwis.tuwien.ac.at/lecture/181142)
Security (http://tuwis.tuwien.ac.at/lecture/188339)
Internet Security (http://tuwis.tuwien.ac.at/lecture/188366)
Advanced Internet Security (http://tuwis.tuwien.ac.at/lecture/188449) (mostly in English, parts in German; I don't know why it's not in English language completely)

But I'm afraid the registration for any of these courses for this term is not possible anymore.

Truth, but the point is the bilateral agreement is between my mother-university and Uni Wien, so I don't think I can choose courses from UT, do I? Mayby UT and UW are good fellows to such an extent they would agree to do so. ;]

You simply have to do a "Mitbelegung" at Vienna University of Technology. This allows you to enrol for courses and exams at UT and doesn't cost extra.

Hmm.. that's a great news for me (as far as there are enough English courses at UT) :] Thanks a lot!
Do you think this Mitbelegung is also available for erasmus student?
Are there any UE and PR (not VO) taught in English?

Do you think this Mitbelegung is also available for erasmus student?

I think it should be no problem.

Are there any UE and PR (not VO) taught in English?

Well, PR are mostly programming (and documenting) a project, so you simply have to find an English-speaking professor and agree on a topic.

Well, the TU Wien offers most courses in German(Guess why ;) ). But u can do exams in English(Ask the profressor of the course) . There are many course hps in English as well. Mitbelegen is no problem. U can do this on any public university in Austria without paying any cent extra.

Could you tell me something more about any of the following courses taught in English:

1)
- Seminar on Artificial Intelligence [SE], 3 ECTS
- Problem Solving and search in AI [VU], 3 ECTS
- Machine Learning [VU], 3 ECTS

2)
- Internet Security [VU], 3 ECTS
- Security [VU], 3 ECTS

3)
- Computer Animation [VU], 3 ECTS
- Scientific Seminar on Computer Graphics and Digital Image Processing [SE], 3 ECTS

4)
- E-Commerce Security [VU], 3 ECTS

5)
- Applied Web Data Extraction and Integration [VU], 3 ECTS (special course)

Here comes my questions:
- I'm doing Bachelor's degree, can I take SE courses?
- If a course was only in 07S can I expect the same course in 07W or rather only in 08S?
- What are passing rules for VU mantioned above and why they have only 3 ECTS, shouldn't they have 6 (3 Vorlesung and 3 Uebung)? Maybe there are Project for them, but I couldn't find any for e.g. Machine Learning.
- What are passing rules for SE mantioned above (exam, project only, ...)?
- Why the course number 5 is listed as 'spetial course' what does it mean?
- Do you recommend those courses?

Thanks,
mp

should be no problem.

- If a course was only in 07S can I expect the same course in 07W or rather only in 08S?

security, internet security and most seminars are offered in both semesters, the other courses only in the summer semesters.

- What are passing rules for VU mantioned above and why they have only 3 ECTS, shouldn't they have 6 (3 Vorlesung and 3 Uebung)? Maybe there are Project for them, but I couldn't find any for e.g. Machine Learning.

because VU means that lecture and exercise are integrated, so you can only do them together in the same semester, so you only get one certificate for 3 ECTS for both combined.

- What are passing rules for SE mantioned above (exam, project only, ...)?

SE is reading papers, writing papers and giving a presentation.

- Why the course number 5 is listed as 'spetial course' what does it mean?

you can safely ignore this.

I only know one equivalent course:

- Software Engineering !

"Software Engineering 1"

however, on univie it is only offered in german

- System programming for Windows NT

I've never heard of such a course. I only know the normal "Systems Programming" course for Unix and GNU/Linux.

Hello,
the course you mentioned above "Data warehousing" is also hold at the TU
the adequate course would be "Data Warehousing 1"

https://tuwis.tuwien.ac.at/zope/_ZopeId/49469409A21bX5YFwwA/tpp/lv/lva_html?num=188343&sem=2007S

one course in englisch is "applied web data extraction and integration"
https://tuwis.tuwien.ac.at/zope/_ZopeId/49469409A21bX5YFwwA/tpp/lv/lva_html?num=181189&sem=2007S

the course already startet, but maybe it is possible to talk to the professor
